1.  " I don't know; I have a good family . . . a fine son . . . I should be happy . . . but I just don't care.  I just don't want to live"

I think that this quote is important because it may help us discover why ratios mom committed suicide.  It also sort of tells us how it was challenging being a mother at that time.

2. " So when my brother Marcus got 21 years, father put him on a starvation diet. Always Marcus sickly- so thin. And when he went for the army examination . . . they didn't take him."

I really thought that this passage was very interesting because of the way that the grandfather thought of the army. The army must have been a horrible experience for him to be that extreme with his children to not go into the army.

  1. Hi Sydney,
I think the quotes you picked were very interesting, particularly the second one. I think the grandfather was to scared to lose his sons. He was willing to make them sick just so they wouldn't be able to go into the army. I think that is a little harsh having your son starve and not sleep just so he can't go and fight. I know he is trying to protect his son in a way, but isn't starving him hurting him too?

    Thanks!

  2. Sydney great post I think this quote is a good quote. " I don't know; I have a good family . . . a fine son . . . I should be happy . . . but I just don't care. I just don't want to live" It is a very clear image and you explained it well. Also great job with the second quote too. But one thing I think you should do to make your post even better is to explain a bit more and use one picture, you know. But this is still a great post.

  3. Sydney, I think both of the quotes you picked were very meaningful. Especially the first one " I don't know; I have a good family . . . a fine son . . . I should be happy . . . but I just don't care. I just don't want to live" I think this scene was shocking for everyone, because this might be the reason why Anja committed suicide. I agree that it tells us how being a mother was a challenge in the past. Overall, I think you explained each of the quotes with detail.

  4. I think that it must be very hard to make your son suffer only not to go to the army. The army must've been an extremely bad experience because a starvation diet is something very extreme for a father to do. The fact that the doctor from the army said that Vladek's son should come back a year later means that he had to repeat the diet again and pass through the same suffering all over again, his father must've been angry because he had to force his son to do the diet again.

  5. Sydney,

I liked the way you expressed your opinions on your explanations. But, I think you can improve your post a little by writing more next time. Give more details and even more opinion. If you write more, if will not only look more professional but more detailed. Additionally, you can add if you agree or disagree with the lines. But overall it was great :)
