Maus

MAUS extra research pg 1 to 71 By Antonio

Art Spigleman wrote the book Maus.  The gender or the theme of this book is graphics novels. This book talks about the Nazism and Jews being persecuted by Hitler. Hitler, was the aggressive dictator of Nazi Germany. He wanted to rule most of Europe. Hitler became the leader of the Nazi party in 1921and in 1923, he went to prison for 9 moths because he attempted to overthrow the german government. When he was in prison he wrote a book called Mein Kampf, which basically said that all problems were caused by Jews. In 1934 he became president and took control of the army. In 1939 the Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia and started World War II, conquering by force many countries such as France. During the war Hitler persecuted the Jews, killing them in mass in what constituted the holocaust.  In this book the author uses postmodern techniques such as using animals to represent different races of the world. For example, In this book Jews are represented as mice, Germans or Nazis represented as cats, and the non Jews polish are represented as pigs. The author, Art Spigleman, got inspired to write this book by a true story lived by his family. In the book he told his real father holocaust experience during World War II. Most of the story tells about Spigleman real life story for a period of time, It says about the difficult relationship of his family. It tells how his real mother committed suicide when he was 20 years. And it tells about the experience of his real fathers holocaust experience.

  1. I really liked how you mentioned how World War II started. Also I liked that you mentioned like what Hitler did, like how he was in prison for 9 months. And I never knew that he wrote a book, so that was interesting to know that. You did a really good job on researching!

  2. Antonio,

I really have no clue about the past of Germany and the Nazis, so I think your post was able to fill in a good part of my knowledge. For example, when I was reading the book, I didn't really understand much about the story line and where it was heading, but I think some of those doubts have cleared up. As stated in your post, Hitler was a person who had tried to overthrow the German government, which was a fact I did not know before. Nevertheless, there was another very interesting fact which was that Hitler went to prison and while there, he wrote a book about that everything was the fault of the Jews. Actually, I can't really say if this is good or bad because I have no knowledge or no influence about these certain events about the past. However, I think most of the opinions I have gained about the history of World War II were because of the influence of other people's opinions. Overall, I think you post was good and I had a good time reading to learn more about the past in World War II.
