Rotation #6 - Historical Context - Chloé C.

  1. How did historical events influence the ideas in the novel?  What cultural issues may have influenced, challenged, or inspired the author?
The novel is heavily based on real events, with it mainly being about the war in Iran during the 80's. It talks about the story of a 10-year-old girl whose name is Marji, who is in fact the author of the book Persepolis. It talks about her life, the rules of the country, and the choices her family makes during all of this conflict. Marji talks about her entire teenage life in this books of the series (Persepolis 2 talks about her life in Europe). Marji decided to take her experiences and show them to the Western world, giving people many different ways of thinking. She also decided to show how the life of people was in Iran during the mess of the Revolution, and how many things that were modern in the country were turned back to the old principles, like women wearing the burqs.

I chose this image because it shows how the change happened in Iran from new to old.

  1. Chloe,

I agree with your blog post. The novel undoubtedly talks about many of the changes made to Iran after the Islamic Revolution. However, why do you think that such an event inspired her to write a book to clear her country's name? It certainly must've came to your head, I mean. Based on what you've read so far, what conclusions can you make regarding this?

  2. Chloe,

I really liked your blog post because it showed some background knowledge towards the book and history of Iran. Something specific that I liked about your post is the part where you mention that by publishing the book, it made people think. In other words, publishing Persepolis made some people share their opinions and beliefs based on Marjane’s experiences. This reminded me of one of our essential questions, what is the value of expression of strong beliefs? My value was that people from all around the world share what they believe in, each time making a stronger group by supporting this certain belief. Therefore, sharing this story with different people support different opinions about various things. In conclusion, your answer was clever and showed that you understood what was happening in the book.
